About The Author

Hi, I’, Wendy McGlone.

On Monday September 3rd,  2018 I moved to Vancouver, Canada from Ireland. In a province with a population of 5 million people, the same population as the entire island of Ireland, I knew one person. On Wednesday, September 5th, I attended an interview and an assessment with Rachel and Ciara from Staff Systems, a leading recruitment agency established in 1991. On Friday September 14th, after just two rounds of interviews and a phone call with the HR Director, I was offered a contract worth €62,000 with one of the top 5 accounting firms in Vancouver. BUT my story doesn't end there.

I have an insider background in recruitment.

Right before coming home from Vancouver, I spent a bit of time training and working in recruitment with an agency, Impact  Recruitment.

I got to see from the other side of the desk.

I was looking at 100s of CVs every day.

I screened 100s of candidates on the phone.

I think of it as work experience in an agency.

I was new so I interviewed more people than I probably should have.

I wanted the experience. I wanted to meet candidates and find out what their pain points were.

It was market research for me.

Right before I finished up in the Accounting Firm a CV came across my desk. It was to fill the role I was leaving. It was for an Executive Assistant / Executive Assistant role.

A guy called Paddy applied via a Facebook posting. His CV was written in the first person. His title was hospitality X. Customer Service Professional would have gotten a more familiar response. Straight away your mind thinks, "Why is a guy with hospitality experience applying for this role?"

He highlighted some of his grammar mistakes in red colour font. His CV had paragraphs and no bullet points. I could keep going on. The point is this. You need to make it beyond obvious why you should get an interview. Make your suitability obvious.

It became obvious from meeting candidates there was a disconnect between their CVs and how they actually presented themselves in person.

Most were competent, incredibly capable people. I met a lot of Irish people who had just arrived in Vancouver and didn't know how the job market worked here. They just didn't know how to write a CV. They didn't know what the hiring manager was looking for. Well, now you will.

And if you stick with me for a while, I'll share with you everything I know about getting an interview and earning more money than you know what to do with it.
